DAY 1 SYDNEY TO MAITLAND (163KM/2HRS)
Head north out of Sydney, and take the turnoff to Gosford for a visit to the Bulgandry Aboriginal Rock Carvings at the Brisbane Waters National Park and the quaint art galleries in Terrigal. Continue on to Lake Macquarie - one of Australia’s largest coastal lakes - where you’ll enjoy water-skiing, wind surfing, canoeing, sailing, surfing, beach kayaking and great fishing. Travel to Newcastle where you can visit the Newcastle Art Gallery, tour the city by tram, explore Fort Scratchley and the Maritime Museum, and enjoy the harbour and ocean foreshores. Visit nearby Maitland, a heritage city in the heart of the Hunter, and whose attractions include the Historic Maitland Gaol, Maitland City Art Gallery, the Heritage Walk, stately mansions, grand civic buildings and churches.

DAY 2 MAITLAND TO TAMWORTH (252KMS/ 3HRS 20 MINS)
Continue on to the heritage town of Quirindi followed by the quaint village of Nundle where you can try your hand at some fossicking, or enjoy a picnic at Chaffey Dam, Ponderosa Park, or Hanging Rock. Travel on to Tamworth - home of Australian country music - where you can enjoy the Heritage Walk, tour Britten’s Brewery, and head up to Oxley Scenic Lookout for a spectacular view over the city.

DAY 2 SYDNEY TO MAITLAND (110KMS/1 HR 24 MINS)
Head to Walcha where you’ll find a unique combination of historic buildings and contemporary sculptures produced by local artists and craftspeople, followed by a visit to Oxley Wild Rivers National Park - the seventh largest national park in New South Wales. Travel to Uralla, stopping off at Dangar’s Lagoon -a wildlife reserve for the many birds and animals that populate the area, before visiting McCrossins Mill which features an exhibition of paintings depicting the infamous bushranger Thunderbolt’s last days. On arriving in Armidale familiarise yourself with the town by taking the free heritage trolley tour around the city. Afterwards, choose from a smorgasbord of activities such as a piano recital at the Conservatorium of Music, a jazz or theatre performance, or visit the New England Regional Art Museum, the opened Museum of Printing, or the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place.

Be charmed by the Scottish-heritage town of Glen Innes which has its own registered tartan, street names written in Gaelic and English and celebrates the various Celtic feast days. Further on, visit Emmaville where you’ll enjoy some spectacular high country scenery or the Emmaville Mining Museum to view the Curnow mineral collection. Continue on to Torrington where you can fossick for minerals, walk to the bizarre Mystery Face rock formation or climb to Thunderbolt’s Lookout, before arriving in Tenterfield. Tenterfield is known as the Birthplace of our Nation and houses landmark buildings such as the School of Arts building (incorporating the Henry Parkes Museum which tells the story of Australian Federation), the Police Station and Gaol, the Famous Tenterfield Saddlery which still operates today, the Railway Station and Stannum House.
